This is my first official blog post. I feel so technological.
I’ve put off starting a blog for a while. Oh, don’t get me wrong. The idea is absolutely wonderful. And to be honest, quite in line with my own particular views on communication.
What an interesting concept. Basically, a blog like a journal. Or a diary. Only instead of being private, it’s something you want everyone to read. Which is pretty much like any journal I’ve ever kept.
I went through that weird phase where I’d write stuff I wanted my mom or sister or friends to read, and then “accidently” leave the journal somewhere I knew it would be find.
Looking back, I’m not quite sure why I did this. It could have been that I had stuff I wanted to say but didn’t want to say it to their faces; Sort of an avoidant tactic. It may have been that I just wanted to test them, see if they’d read it.
So I was either a coward, or a fledging evil genious trying test the ethical wherewithal of the people around me.
Or both. I dunno.
Considering that, I still put off blogging for well over two years now. Which in the current age of extreme technological advancment, puts me about 3 decades behind the rest of the world.
And it obviously not because I don’t like the idea, but more because I didn’t like the word.
It’s like “blob” but also kind of like “log.” I don’t really have any use for logs, and I certainly do my best to stay away from blobs of any kind. (When it comes to food items, I prefer dollops to blobs). Based entirely on my dislike of the terminology, I avoided this entire little subculture–the blogosphere. (Another awful word.)
And then recently, I found out that ‘blog’ is actually short for “web-log.” This is something I did not know. I hate not knowing things, especially things related to either words, or technology. I confess myself both disappointed and shocked at my own ignorance. I should have realized this much sooner.
And so, given my evident penchant for expository exhibitionism (and love of multisyllabic words) it seems odd that I’m only now getting into the wonderful world of web-logs. Oh, excuse me, “blogs.”
“Blog” is such a ubiquitous word in our vernacular that I failed to consider the interesting beauty of the fact that it’s a bastardization of a previous term that only came into being a few years ago. Such is the nature of language.
Now that I have that little fact firmly in mind, I actually kind of like the word.
It’s still dumb, but even the word “blog” itself is sort of representative of the advancements in technology that allow blogs to exist and thrive. Additionally, it’s kind of cool in the sense that a word like “blog” didn’t exist 5 years ago, and yet is now not only a ‘thing’ but also an act.
Imagine that? You’re a word for a mere few years and already you’re both a noun and a verb. Good for you, blog.
I don’t like the word, but I like the idea.
I get to spit out all the nonsense I want, and the internetz tells me it’s okay. So anyone unfortunate enough to find their way over here pretty much gets subjected to my blathering.
I’d better pretend I have stuff to say. But keep reading, I’m sure I’ll stumble across something relevant.
Oh, yea. Since this is a fitness blog…um. Take vitamins. And drink more water. You crazy kids and your Guitar Hero. It’s the number 3 leading cause of video-game related dehydration.
It’s true. I read it on the internet, so it must be true. And now you’ve read it too. So it’s definitely true. See? It’s spreading.
So drink your water. The internet said it’s good for you.
I’ll be back tomorrow with something real.
