Saturdays With Roman, Part 1

This is going to be a short post in terms of text, because we’ve got some video to get to.

Normally, I have a hard time reining in my loquacity, so I’ll do my best to be quick.

Today, I want to announce on a new feature of the Roman Empirer – a video blog series I’m calling “Saturdays with Roman.”

It’s kind of like Tuesdays with Morrie, only instead of being about “an old man, a young man, and life’s greatest lessons,” it’s more like “a well-dressed bro, a camera, and some random rambling on the internet.”

Still, you can see how they’re similar.

The focus of the series is simple: when I was younger, I used to wake up early on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons; it was a unique and special time, and had a very specific type of ritual. From as young as 6 years old, I would get up and make myself a bowl of cereal (Honey Nut Cheerios, to be exact), and plop down in front of the TV in my little Superman underoos to watch all manner of animated awesomeness, ranging from the Smurfs to the Bionic Six. As a complete side note, can we just have a moment to reflect on the Disney Afternoon, and how awesome that was?

As I got old, the trend continued. Even in my mid-twenties, I would wake up at about 8 in the morning, bleary eyed from having stayed out till 3, I would do the same thing. At that point, I was wearing Diesel briefs and the cereal was oatmeal mixed with protein powder (I wasn’t yet fasting), but I would still watch old cartoons like X-Men and Spiderman, which had found a new home on some of newer channels that showed retro TV shows.

Alas, those days are no longer. Saturday morning cartoons–the ones from my generation, that is–are n0 longer on air. At least, not on Saturday mornings. On top of that, now that all into intermittent fasting and whatnot, my first meal isn’t until 3pm, and I certainly can’t hang out in my undies until mid-afternoon. I got things to do! All told, Saturday doesn’t really give me much to look forward to–and I am guessing a lot of you are feeling the same.

Until now.

As of today, you’ll have something cool to look forward to: Saturdays with Roman, where we talk about anything and everything, and have fun. Is it as much fun as watching Thundercats and eating fruit loops? Time will tell.

Having said that, here is the first installment of SwR. Enjoy!

So, there you have it – 9 minutes and 45 seconds worth of randomness. Let’s discuss.

I want YOUR thoughts on the following:

Do you think Saturdays with Roman is a good idea?

Why are people so freaked out about sex?

Should I just “stick to fitness”?

Most importantly: what should I talk about next week?

Leave your thoughts and let’s get it goin!

    1) Abso-fucking-lutely. 2) I think guys are freaked out about sex because they’re afraid they suck at it. 3) Hellz nah, son! 4) How do you feel about Disney’s recent purchase of Star Wars?

  • Aweome! I think its great you want to offer more. If the videos had a theme or some sort of structure I think would make if more beneficial for all. and so screw the box…offering all you have is perfect.

Saturdays with Roman is a great idea, looking forward to it. I seriously don’t know why people are so freaked about sex, it has to be because they don’t like to admit they are bad at it!! Is like that status you once posted about people using incomplete swear words and feeling good about that, haha. Don’t stick to fitness please! even though I believe The avengers is way better than the new Batman movie I loved both emails so talk about anything, you are awesome… Is like the perfect mix of Joey Tribbiani, Barney Stinson, Sheldon Cooper and Tony Stark :D About next week, or any other week… I liked the Twilight Saga a lot even though I’m 32 and enjoyed the Fifty Shades Saga too… what do you think about that one :D Cheers!

Hey Roman, I think its awesome. Variety is the spice of life. A little bit of fitness, a little bit about life. you are a funny dude. keep doing what you are doing. will definately be listening and or viewing. I am 31, so I know exactly what you are talking about. You forgot to mention the original Ninja Turtles. As far as swearing goes, we all do it. thats how people talk. Get over it :)

  • I love the idea Roman. Although I do look forward to waking up early on Saturdays already, because I get up to eat before my events day of strongman training.

Talk all you want about superheroes!

  • Nobody puts Roman in the corner! I like the idea.

I grew up on Saturday morning cartoons and sunday creature double feature and kung fu theater. I could have been such a bad ass ninja if I had the right master. My weekends are now filled with trips to Home Depot, Bed bath & beyond, and food shopping. I could use a little break from the norm as well.

As far as the pick up artist thing, people need to lighten up. Some guys, like myself, are never going feel confident talking to women and could benefit from a little help. Unfortunately, there is no book that could have helped me. Luckily I hit the jackpot when I got married and don’t have to worry about it anymore.

I think your writing reveals a charisma that allows you to transcend the fitness/nutrition platform that originally brought us to your site. Think about arnold…the oak took over the world not bc of the trophies, but because of his personality and how likable he is. Not comparing you two (no offense) but on a smaller scale this is what your talking about. You have built enough of a following that people are interested in your opinion on things unrelated to your profession. This can be attributed partially to you coming off as very intelligent and partially to the humor and wit reflected in your blogs that make people wanna grab a beer with you. Supply and demand bruh… if people are asking these questions and you are willing to discuss these topics then don’t worry about the bitter few that will complain.

  • Mike McGuinn

Listen man, fitness is absolutely what got me to start paying attention to your blog and articles. But, the fact that you talk about “everything” is why I follow your blog and such. My opinion is that this video series is going to be awesome assuming you don’t allow the fools to box you in. Keep being you and we’ll keep reading/watching/listening.

  • Charly

Segment your list and let the people choose, doing so you respect others people time

  • Do it!!! Personally I hate being put in a box. None of us are one-dimensional. Will give me something to look forward to on a Saturday morning other than housework and shopping. Ideas for next weekend: psychological tips to beat the upcoming pig-out season; the similarities/qualities of GOT, LOTR, Star Wars, Firefly and other sci fi/fantasy fans; favorite quotations and why…

  • Dean

Break out that box with a axe my friend!

I’m liking the new video man. Good to see the Marion tattoo up close.

  • Love the new videos Roman. I say let you mind go where it wants and let us hang on for the ride :)

  • ggs2012

This will become my new Sunday morning thing. Out with my soaps in with Roman. Any topic that is relevant to life ,fun and fitness is fine with me..

  • Cindy

I love and respect you but I don’t like the swearing and I didn’t like this video. I think you should talk about what you want to but just remember that your “followers” are various ages and different sexes, so saying some things may upset, offend or put them off. Facebook is an open forum and maybe the place to answer direct questions whereas SwR might be more generalised to cover a wider range of people.just my thoughts and suggestions, which is what you asked for. At the end of the day you will never please all the people all the time so the best way is to be yourself while remembering what I hope your mum or nonna taught you, “be respectful, especially to women”. I believe you probably have a big following comprising of a lot of us women. i hope when you read my points that you do not take them as a judgement or lecture, just as a thoughtful consideration. Thanks and have a great weekend.

    • Hey Cindy,

I appreciate your feedback – it’s always nice to get another opinion, and not just be in an echo chamber.

Your point about the language is one I consider often, and I’ll think on this and perhaps tone the swearing down a bit.

You’ll have to forgive me: it’s just how New Yorkers talk =)

  • Carlitos

Well, maybe because you start approaching the internet to share your goals to get the dream body you always wanted, is why the majority sees you or puts you in that box of fitness dude, but it’s great that you feel like you belong to this world as everybody else does, where day by day other things happens as well, life is about variety and there are several topics we need to discover and experiment to gain experience. I would love to join this interesting Saturdays with Roman, count on me; I think you’ll do it just great.

Some people really under estimate the importance of sex in our species. Other species dont do this, they are all into sex, that is why they do it out in the open so National Geographic cameras can catch them doing their thing. Men for example work just for sex, get in shape for sex, kill for sex, get in sex scandals because of sex, etc. I think it is a topic that can be talked about without getting dirty, so I wouldnt mind if you talked about in this new thing your doing.

As a side note I just want to say the JETS SUCK!! can you tell Im a Dolphin fan. By the way, what is that chemical formula you have tattooed on your forearm?

    • Holy crap are the Jets terrible. Suck is not a strong enough word.

I have the chem structure of testosterone on my arm =)

  • Tony Robledo

Roman I love idea! I think you’re right with not wanting to be pigeonholed. In a very good book titled “Seeking Wisdom”, Charles Munger , the less well-know but also a billionaire, partner of Warren Buffet , speaks frequently about using a multi- disciplinary approach to not only investing, but to life. He utilizes physics, engineering, psychology, nuero-science, statistics, biology, Etc etc….. in every aspect of his thought process. So why should anyone stick to one area when life offers soo much more – see Leonardo DaVinci

  • ogleable

I can say that I lift weights for health reasons (I think it helps keep my Crohn’s disease under control) but I know I also lift for vanity reasons. I want to look attractive to women. So I think fitness and sex are very related.

Being human, I think a lot of things are related directly or indirectly to sex.

Reminds me of an interview with Gene Simmons:

Terry Gross: Are you interested in music, or is the goal of being in a rock band to have sex a lot?

Gene Simmons: I believe in my heart that anyone who gets up there and says what they’re doing is art is on crack, and is delusional, and that in point of fact, what they really … their modus operandi initially — perhaps it changed when they started to question their sexuality, but clearly, initially — it was to get laid and make lots of money. And anybody who tells you otherwise is lying to you.

  • Michael

Dude. That was an awesome video and I look forward to watching “saturdays with roman” on saturdays now, finally there’s something worth while to wake up and watch. As for staying in the box, I think you should break out of it and talk about everything.

  • Anna

Now I have something to look forward to on Saturdays! Yes, talk about everything. :)

  • Liz

Wow. This is brilliant. I love you. Except in that outfit. It’s like a woman’s prison tanktop under grandma’s bathrobe. We can see you Roman. It’s not like email….

  • Why would you “allow” any of us to put you in a box? No one puts baby in the corner :) You might be too young for that reference…. anyway, if you care, there a couple of “women of an age” who follow you and are not really interested in the sexual habits of very young men (ie: our sons) Be Well.

  • joe

Great idea. I love when you do videos. As far as talking about sex, I think old habits die
hard. Recent generations do not have as many reservations about these topics
compared to the older generations but you will still have people that are
uncomfortable with certain topics. I think that you can talk about whatever you
feel like. If that is fitness or something else I will continue to tune in and
take in the awesomeness that is Roman Fitness Systems.

  • I love your wide range of topics and continue to share the blog you posted of your Epic Battle. I go to that one often, its hilarious and great writing. I agree with Daniel, if you don’t want something just delete it. I feel by giving your opinion on such a wide variety of topics, just shows me how human you are. So many times, “fitness guru’s” are put on a pedtastool and appear unapproachable, not the case with you. Keep doing what you’re doing. If it ain’t broke, don’t change it.

  • I wholeheartedly approve of this idea. As for sex, it seems that some people are afraid to speak about what the really want. Others are afraid to admit that they want the same. For next week I vote for the Hobbit or your own personal “poa” style advise. Either would be interesting.
