The studies have been small, but the results are compelling.

May Improve Libido

Maca has a reputation (at least among men) for putting you in the mood and helping you perform like a stallion.

And research shows this perception has some truth to it. Well, not the stallion part.

A 2010 review study found maca significantly improves libido in healthy men.

Another (small) 2015 study found taking maca helped men with mild erectile dysfunction perform better in bed. However, the results were subjective.

Maca could be a game-changer for people taking libido-destroying antidepressants. This study on adults taking antidepressant medication found it improved libido and sexual function.

That said, we could do with updated research on this subject (and larger sample sizes).

Reduces Menopause Symptoms

Maca may be valuable for women experiencing hot flashes, night sweats, fatigue, depression, and low libido associated with menopause.

Research indicates it reduces many unpleasant symptoms associated with this life transition.

We can’t say for sure, but it may slow the decline in female sex hormones during menopause. A pilot study found maca increased estrogen and progesterone levels in menopausal women.

I’d love to see if maca root improves bone loss in postmenopausal women. But I’m getting ahead of myself…
